                                                                    Mindfulness Education

    What is mindfulness?

Widely accepted as a means of developing calm, resilience and non-reactivity, mindfulness is a way of being with our own physical, mental and emotional  experience in a way that is accepting and aware. It is about how we experience ourselves, others and the world around us. It is not aimed at inputing any particular content, but rather at helping us notice what is already present so we know how it is affecting us. With mindfulness, we can increase our ability to respond appropriately in any given situation.

    Benefits of mindfulness for children
        •   Mindful children experience less stress, anxiety and sadness

     •    Mindful children are better able to cope with change and other stressors.
        •    Mindful children have better sleep habits
        •    Mindful children feel more connected to the people around them
        •    Mindful children are more compassionate
        •    Mindful children have more confidence in themselves and their decisions

    •    Mindful children tend to perform better academically
        •    Mindful children understand, feel and express gratitude more freely

        •    Mindful children are better able to focus and concentrate

        •    Mindful children are more resilient

     •    Mindful children are all around happier and more content

How is mindfulness applied to different areas of our lives?

Just as learning to read helps us gain a wide variety of knowledge, in the same way mindfulness “literacy” has many applications.

    1. Physical Literacy: Learning to relax in our bodies, developing a sense of kinesthetic and spacial awareness, being able to observe changes in our bodies and how the body is affected by our thoughts and emotions.
    2. Mental Literacy: Developing the ability to focus on one thing instead of being distracted. Working the muscles of our attention and increasing the capacity to attend to a task.
    3. Emotional Literacy: Bringing forth the qualities of the heart that help us to relate to ourselves and others in a more compassionate, kind, joyful and accepting way.
    4. Social Literacy: Learning how to communicate with others in a way that is effective and beneficial. Being able to express our needs while also increasing our ability to listen and  be receptive to the needs of others.
    5. Global Literacy: Increasing awareness of the natural world and developing an understanding of the interconnectedness of life.
